Business and the Built Environment
….Combined created a unique attraction

50 years of spectacular growth
….Under very particular conditions
HK is located on China’s south coast...
7 million hard working people
Area: 1,104 kmsq (Canaries 7,447 km2)
Governance:
1.Positive non-interventionism / Laissez-faire capitalism
2.Legal system based on UK law
3.Relationship between government and private sector
4.A drive to succeed

50’s and 60’s
China provided
An exodus of cheap labour from China
Hong Kong
 Used labour for rapid industrialisation
 Global supplier of cheap goods

And ‘Made in Hong Kong’ became a global brand

70’s and 80’s
China needed….
An export route and help modernising

Saw ‘Made in China’ coming
 Hong Kong provided this
Hong Kong
  Moved manufacturing to China
  Developed Financial services sector

90’s and 00’s
China needed help….
To import foreign expertise to modernise
  To channel foreign direct investment
Hong Kong
Became main route for China import/export
Became main route for China investment

  Became a global financial centre

This physical growth has taken place under extreme limitations producing a unique result:
-  7 million people live and work on only 276 km2
Required invention, resilience and rapid change
-  Complete dedication to looking forward a result quite unique.

Hong Kong has over 7600 skyscrapers (over 80m)
…..The most of any city in the world

Total land:    1,104 km2
38% (416 km2 ) of the land is Parks and Reserves
  ……Bigger than La Gomera 370 km2
Only 25% (276 km2 ) of the land is built on
  ……The area of El Hierro

So why a successful tourist destination?
...... More than 29 million a year
